Four teenagers stole a luxury Mercedes G-Wagon and led police on an hours-long chase through New Jersey before crashing head-on into a sedan, killing a grandmother and her longtime partner in a tragedy that has devastated an entire community.

Fatal Collision Ends Joyride

Alice Stilwell Holt, 67, and Robert Barr Jr., 54, both of Egg Harbor Township, died around 7:30 a.m. on August 22 near Route 50 and Third Street in Mays Landing. Prosecutors allege that Nayshaun Brown, 18, of Atlantic City, and three juveniles stole a 2024 Mercedes-Benz G Wagon around 3:40 a.m. that Saturday morning. Surveillance video captured the moment the black luxury vehicle struck the Hyundai sedan carrying the couple, sending the smaller car careening into a nearby gas station.

The teens walked away from the wreckage with minor injuries and attempted to flee on foot. Authorities apprehended them shortly after the crash. Brown and the three juveniles face conspiracy charges involving aggravated assault, joyriding, eluding, and receiving a stolen motor vehicle. Brown faces an additional charge of employing a juvenile in the commission of a crime.

Hours-Long Police Pursuit

Officers had been tracking the stolen G-Wagon since approximately 3:40 a.m. in nearby Longport, where it sped past a local officer who attempted a traffic stop. Hamilton Township police later spotted the vehicle and pursued it around 7:45 a.m., but officers lost sight of the SUV minutes before the fatal collision occurred. Brown remains in custody at the Atlantic County Justice Facility. Two juveniles are also being held, while a Superior Court judge released the third juvenile Sunday morning.

Remembering the Victims

A GoFundMe organized by a family friend describes Stilwell Holt as a beloved mother and grandmother whose sudden death has left the family in deep grief. According to her obituary, Holt and Barr were partners for more than 20 years after her husband passed away. The couple enjoyed cooking together, attending farmers markets, gardening, and spending quality time with each other and their two cats. The fundraiser highlights how the shock of their sudden and violent deaths has made an already painful time even harder for their surviving family members to bear.
