A McDonald’s employee in Lodi, California opened fire on a female coworker inside the restaurant Monday morning before police fatally shot him during the confrontation. The incident highlights growing concerns about workplace violence and the split-second decisions law enforcement officers face when responding to active shooter situations.

Armed Employee Opens Fire at Fast Food Restaurant

Jonhatan Anguiano, 29, entered the San Joaquin County McDonald’s location around 9:30 a.m. Monday carrying a semi-automatic pistol. Surveillance footage captured Anguiano wearing his employee uniform with a long black sleeve covering his right arm moments before the shooting began. He fired multiple shots at a female coworker, seriously injuring her before police arrived on scene. Investigators have not yet determined what motivated Anguiano to target his colleague.

When Lodi Police Department officers arrived at the restaurant, they encountered the wounded woman. As officers attempted to engage with Anguiano, he turned his weapon on them and opened fire at an officer. Police returned fire, striking Anguiano. He was pronounced dead at the scene. The injured coworker was transported to a local hospital where she remains in stable condition.

Community Reacts to Rare Violence

Cheryl Marie Steneck was waiting at the drive-through cashier window when the violence erupted. She reported hearing four shots fired inside the restaurant. Lodi City Councilmember Cameron Bregman, who lives one block from the McDonald’s, called the shooting both unacceptable and alarming for the tight-knit community. Bregman noted that Lodi’s small-town nature has already generated multiple rumors about the incident, but emphasized the importance of allowing law enforcement to complete their investigation before drawing conclusions.

Investigation Continues

The San Joaquin County District Attorney’s Office is leading a multi-agency investigation into the shooting. The Lodi Police Department released surveillance images of Anguiano from inside the restaurant shortly before the fatal encounter.
