An 18-year-old Pennsylvania man faces homicide charges after allegedly stabbing his girlfriend to death and enlisting his mother’s help to conceal the crime, authorities report. The victim, Karoline Heintz, a college freshman and soccer player, was discovered in the back of her family’s Jeep Cherokee near her university campus.
The Crime and Coverup
Royce Moser allegedly stabbed Heintz during an argument while the couple sat in her Jeep outside his father’s home in North Strabane Township on the night of August 19. Pennsylvania State Police trooper Rocco Gagliardi said Moser told investigators he went inside to retrieve something for Heintz, returning instead with a kitchen knife. After stabbing her in the chest, he dragged her body into the vehicle’s rear hatch and drove to his mother’s residence in Beallsville.
Surveillance footage captured both Royce and his mother, Rachel Moser, 56, wearing blue latex gloves as they worked to dispose of evidence. According to the criminal complaint, Rachel Moser directed her son to bring the Jeep into her garage, provided disinfectant spray and gloves, and helped clean the vehicle. She then drove her own car while her son followed in Heintz’s Jeep to dump it near Pennsylvania Western University’s campus.
Family Discovers the Truth
Heintz’s family grew concerned when she failed to return to her dormitory. Her father attempted contact without success, prompting the family to check location data from an Apple AirTag in her vehicle and her phone. This information led them to alert California Borough police, who discovered her body shortly after midnight on August 20. Blood splatters marked both the interior and exterior of the Jeep.
Rachel Moser allegedly instructed her son to bathe and change clothes upon returning home, then placed the murder weapon in a trash bag for disposal and laundered his clothing. Both suspects were denied bail and face charges including homicide, tampering with evidence, obstruction, conspiracy, and abuse of a corpse.
A Promising Life Cut Short
Heintz had just graduated from Peters Township High School and joined Pennsylvania Western University’s women’s soccer team as a defender. Trooper Gagliardi described her as an 18-year-old ready to explore life and begin her college journey. Both defendants remain in custody awaiting their next court appearance on August 31. Court records do not indicate whether either has retained legal representation.
