A 61-year-old Charlotte man faces multiple felony charges after allegedly opening fire on a family vehicle during a road rage incident on Interstate 77 in Virginia, injuring a 12-year-old child and a 20-year-old woman in what authorities describe as a dangerous escalation of highway violence.

Interstate Shooting Injures Two

Virginia State Police responded to reports of gunfire along northbound I-77 just north of the North Carolina state line at approximately 9 a.m. on Saturday, August 22. Troopers arriving at the scene found a Jeep with multiple bullet holes and two injured passengers. The 12-year-old child and 20-year-old woman sustained minor injuries from the shooting and received medical treatment at a local hospital. Both victims are expected to recover from their injuries.

Witnesses reported seeing a Mercedes-Benz fleeing the scene at high speed immediately after the shooting occurred. State troopers quickly established a perimeter and began searching for the suspect vehicle along the interstate corridor. Law enforcement officers located and stopped the Mercedes-Benz at Exit 19, where they took Richard Ariviello of Charlotte into custody without further incident.

Serious Felony Charges Filed

Prosecutors charged Ariviello with four felonies: malicious shooting into an occupied vehicle, shooting from a vehicle, maliciously causing bodily harm to another with intent to maim, and use of a firearm while committing a felony. These charges carry significant prison time under Virginia law. The driver of the targeted Jeep also received a citation for reckless driving, though authorities have not disclosed what actions led to that charge or how the road rage incident began.
