The incident unfolded Monday along Highway 49 near Russell Road when a Calaveras Unified school bus became the center of escalating tensions. According to a 12-year-old student on board, the situation began after the bus stopped and one child climbed out through a window. The driver then ordered all students to remain seated and close the windows, announcing they would need to wait for law enforcement before anyone could leave.

Nichole Wellington said her son was frightened by the situation, prompting her to rush to the bus location. When the driver refused to open the door, Wellington instructed her son to exit through a window. Video footage captured the scene showing children squeezing through windows while parents gathered outside the stopped bus.

Parent Arrested After Breaking Door

The confrontation intensified when one parent struck the bus door with enough force to shatter the glass. That individual was subsequently taken into custody at the school district’s request and faces vandalism charges, according to the Calaveras County Sheriff’s Office. The footage also shows at least one parent climbing through a window to confront the driver directly while other students remained trapped inside.

The sheriff’s office issued a statement emphasizing that school bus windows should only be used as emergency exits. Deputies noted that multiple students departed through open windows during the incident, a practice authorities discouraged except in genuine emergencies. Not all parents supported the aggressive response to the driver’s decision. Rebecca Glover, whose two children were aboard the bus, told them to stay put despite the chaos. She defended the driver’s difficult position, noting the responsibility to consider every single child’s safety on the bus, not just one. Wellington disagreed, arguing that releasing children to parents who arrived at the scene could have prevented the escalation entirely.
