Hatchet Attack ESCALATES — SWAT Moves In

A 37-year-old Seattle man sits in King County Jail following a violent domestic dispute that required SWAT intervention after he allegedly chased his roommate through their apartment with a hatchet and refused to surrender to police.

Twelve-Hour Rampage Ends in Standoff

Seattle Police responded to an apartment complex near North 87th Street and Greenwood Avenue North around 3 p.m. on October 1 after receiving reports of an assault with a deadly weapon. The 46-year-old victim told officers his roommate first attacked him with a hatchet at approximately 7 a.m. that morning. After the initial assault, the suspect fled the scene while the victim filed a police report.

When the victim returned to the apartment later that afternoon, the violence escalated. Police say the suspect renewed his attack, forcing the victim to barricade himself inside a bedroom for protection. Officers discovered the suspect had struck the bedroom door repeatedly with the hatchet, chopping partially through the wood in an apparent attempt to reach his roommate. The victim remained unharmed throughout the ordeal.

SWAT Deployment Required for Arrest

Upon arrival, officers found the suspect had barricaded himself inside the apartment and refused all communication. Police negotiators attempted to establish contact, but the man would not engage in any dialogue. The Seattle Police Department’s SWAT team received authorization to intervene and successfully took the suspect into custody. During the operation, law enforcement deployed pepper spray inside the apartment complex, requiring Seattle Fire Department crews to ventilate the building to protect other residents from exposure.

The suspect sustained minor injuries from the pepper spray but did not require hospital transport. No other residents reported injuries from either the initial attack or the subsequent police operation. Police booked the man into King County Jail on felony assault charges.

Rising Urban Safety Concerns

This incident highlights ongoing concerns about domestic violence and roommate disputes in urban housing environments. The twelve-hour span between attacks allowed the victim to seek help from authorities, demonstrating the importance of immediate reporting when threatened with violence. The successful resolution without serious injury showcases effective coordination between Seattle’s patrol officers, negotiation teams, SWAT units, and fire department personnel responding to a dangerous situation in a residential neighborhood.
