After nearly three decades of investigation, authorities in Georgia have arrested a suspect in the 1998 stabbing death of a young woman found along a rural highway, demonstrating that law enforcement never gave up on bringing her killer to justice.
Arrest Follows Decades of Investigation
The Georgia Bureau of Investigation announced the arrest of James Lawrence III, 47, of Irwin County, on October 1. Lawrence faces charges of felony murder, malice murder, and aggravated assault in connection with the death of Christy Dawn Myers, who was just 20 years old when she was killed. Myers was discovered on September 15, 1998, near her vehicle along the Broxton-Fitzgerald Highway in Coffee County, having suffered multiple stab wounds.
The Coffee County Sheriff’s Office requested GBI assistance shortly after Myers’ body was found. Investigators from the GBI’s Regional Investigative Office in Douglas worked alongside local law enforcement for the next 28 years, pursuing every available lead and evidence in the case.
Forensic Testing Identifies Suspect
According to the GBI, continued forensic testing ultimately identified Lawrence as a suspect in the homicide. While authorities have not disclosed specific details about the forensic evidence that linked Lawrence to the crime, advances in DNA technology and other forensic methods have proven instrumental in solving numerous cold cases across the country in recent years. The Irwin County Sheriff’s Office assisted in locating and apprehending Lawrence, who was subsequently booked into the Coffee County Jail.
Pursuit of Justice Continues
The GBI emphasized that Lawrence’s arrest represents the culmination of nearly three decades of persistent investigative work. Once the case file is complete, it will be forwarded to the Waycross Judicial Circuit District Attorney’s Office for prosecution. Authorities continue to seek additional information from the public regarding Myers’ death. Anyone with relevant details can contact the GBI Regional Investigative Office in Douglas at 912-389-4103 or the Coffee County Sheriff’s Office at 912-384-4227. The GBI also accepts anonymous tips, ensuring that witnesses who may have information can come forward safely. This case serves as a reminder that unsolved crimes remain priorities for law enforcement, and that justice, though delayed, can still be achieved through dedicated investigation and modern forensic capabilities.
