Trump Admin Threatens THESE State Election Officials With Jail

The Department of Justice has issued stark warnings to state election officials across the country, threatening criminal prosecution and jail time for anyone who fails to preserve election records as required by federal law.

Criminal Penalties Put Officials on Notice

Acting Deputy Attorney General Trent McCotter sent letters Thursday to election leaders in multiple states, reminding them of their legal obligation to preserve ballots, pollbooks, precinct sign-in sheets, and other election materials. The warning came with teeth: officials who willfully fail to comply face up to one year in prison and a one-thousand-dollar fine. McCotter characterized the correspondence as a reminder of existing law, but state officials described the tone as unusually threatening compared to previous administrations.

Connecticut Secretary of State Stephanie Thomas expressed concern about the approach, stating that while she hoped the emphasis on criminal penalties served merely as a legal reminder, the matter could have been handled with more appropriate communication. Multiple state election officials told ABC News that the invocation of criminal liability represents a significant departure from how federal authorities have traditionally engaged with their state counterparts on these longstanding obligations.

Broader Pattern of Election Worker Pressure

The Justice Department letters arrive amid continuing threats from the Trump administration against election workers in California and other states. Federal authorities have warned these officials with potential jail time for counting ballots the DOJ claims may belong to noncitizen voters. This escalating pressure on state and local election administrators raises questions about federal overreach into constitutionally protected state election processes and the intimidation of public servants performing their lawful duties.

Georgia Records Seizure Continues

The warnings follow dramatic federal action in Fulton County, Georgia, where the FBI seized more than six hundred boxes of ballots and election records in January. The investigation, driven by allies of President Donald Trump seeking to overturn the 2020 election outcome, resulted in federal agents taking possession of massive amounts of election materials. When Fulton County officials requested the return of their ballots in May, a federal judge denied the motion, leaving the records in federal custody indefinitely.

The combination of criminal threats, ongoing investigations, and federal seizures of state election materials signals an aggressive new approach to federal oversight of election administration that may fundamentally alter the relationship between Washington and state officials responsible for conducting elections.
