Federal authorities executed a search warrant at a Beverly Hills mansion Tuesday morning as part of an ongoing investigation into former Democratic Representative Eric Swalwell, who resigned from Congress earlier this year amid multiple sexual misconduct allegations and renewed scrutiny over his past relationship with a suspected Chinese intelligence operative.
Latest Federal Action
The FBI raid on the California mansion marks the latest development in a months-long investigation into Swalwell. Federal agents previously searched the former congressman’s Washington residence in August and confiscated his electronic devices at San Francisco International Airport. Sources familiar with the matter confirmed the operation relates to a probe into allegations of sexual misconduct. Swalwell was not arrested or detained during either incident.
At least five women have come forward with accusations against Swalwell, including sexual misconduct and rape allegations. One accuser is a former member of his congressional staff. The former lawmaker resigned from Congress in April after facing threats of expulsion from the House, ending his 13-year tenure representing California’s constituents.
Chinese Intelligence Connection Resurfaces
The investigation intensifies as declassified documents released Monday by the White House’s Government Transparency Task Force revealed details about Swalwell’s relationship with Christine Fang, known as “Fang Fang,” a suspected Chinese intelligence operative. According to FBI records, Swalwell admitted to agents he had “physical relations” with Fang on multiple occasions, with their final encounter occurring in March 2015.
Fang maintained suspected connections to China’s Ministry of State Security, and intelligence officials reportedly identified her parents as known Chinese intelligence officers. The FBI interviewed Swalwell twice about the relationship, first in May 2015 and again in March 2016. The newly released documents have reignited concerns about potential national security vulnerabilities during his time serving on the House Intelligence Committee.
Political Fallout
Swalwell’s resignation came after he withdrew from California’s gubernatorial race earlier in the year. At the time of his departure from Congress, he released a statement vowing to fight what he called “serious false allegations” while acknowledging he bore responsibility for unspecified mistakes. The former representative’s political career collapsed rapidly as the combined weight of sexual misconduct allegations and renewed scrutiny over foreign intelligence connections proved insurmountable. Federal investigators continue their work, though no charges have been filed against Swalwell at this time.
