Walmart Recalls 44,000 Over Dangerous Health Risk

Pacific Coast Producers has recalled more than 44,000 cans of Great Value Fruit Cocktail sold at Walmart stores across seven states after the Food and Drug Administration discovered potential lead contamination in the product.

Scope of the Recall

The recall affects 1,836 cases of Great Value Fruit Cocktail in Fruit Juice from Concentrate, with each case containing 24 individual 15-ounce cans. Consumers should look for UPC code 078742369570, lot code 6FCB 04 C2263, and a Best If Used By date of September 1, 2027. The affected products were distributed to stores in Alabama, Arizona, Louisiana, New Mexico, Pennsylvania, Washington, and Wyoming.

Walmart responded swiftly to the October 1 recall announcement. A company spokesperson confirmed that safety remains their highest priority and explained their protocol for removing recalled items from shelves, blocking sales at registers and online, and working directly with suppliers during investigations. The FDA classified this as a Class II recall on October 20.

Understanding the Health Risk

The FDA determined that the fruit cocktail may contain elevated levels of lead, a toxic metal that poses serious health concerns, especially for children and pregnant women. A Class II recall classification indicates that exposure to the contaminated product may cause temporary or medically reversible health problems, though the probability of serious adverse consequences remains remote. Lead exposure can affect multiple body systems and accumulate over time, making even low-level contamination a legitimate public health concern.

Broader Pattern of Consumer Safety Issues

This recall follows another recent Walmart product safety action involving nearly 4.5 million Expert Grill brushes. The Consumer Product Safety Commission issued that recall over concerns that wire bristles could break loose during cleaning, potentially becoming lodged on grills or contaminating food. These consecutive recalls highlight ongoing challenges in the retail supply chain and the importance of robust quality control measures throughout the manufacturing and distribution process.

What Consumers Should Do

Anyone who purchased the affected fruit cocktail should immediately stop consuming the product and return it to their local Walmart store for a full refund. Consumers do not need a receipt to return recalled items. Parents should be especially vigilant, as children face greater risks from lead exposure due to their smaller body size and developing systems. Questions about the recall can be directed to Pacific Coast Producers or Walmart customer service.
