Saylor Hayes was reported missing Sunday afternoon from a rental home on Pawleys Island where her family was vacationing. Search teams found her body Monday morning in waters near Hagley Landing. The severely nonverbal child had autism and a documented attraction to water, making her particularly vulnerable. Georgetown County Sheriff’s Office coordinated an extensive search operation that deployed specialized tracking equipment throughout the area.
John Herb Hayes III, 70, and Geordyn Nichole Hayes, 31, were arrested Tuesday in Carter County, Tennessee. Both parents face charges of unlawfully placing a child at risk and willfully abandoning a child. Arrest warrants reveal they failed to provide appropriate supervision and safeguards for their daughter’s specific needs and known behaviors.
Critical Safety Device Left Behind
Saylor had been enrolled in the Project Lifesaver program since June 2024 through the Washington County Virginia Sheriff’s Office. The program equips at-risk individuals with wearable transmitters that emit unique radio frequencies, allowing trained personnel to track missing persons quickly. The specialized band cannot be unclasped and requires physical cutting for removal, ensuring clients cannot accidentally remove the device themselves.
When South Carolina authorities contacted Virginia officials requesting Saylor’s transmitter frequency, searchers checked the family’s Washington County home. They discovered the tracking device inside a vehicle on the property. Sheriff Blake Andis confirmed the equipment functioned properly but noted the heartbreaking reality that Saylor was not wearing it when she vanished.
