Rent Checks VANISH — Families Face Eviction

East Point police have arrested two women and are searching for a third after allegedly uncovering a fraud scheme that stole over $65,000 in rent payments from at least 60 apartment residents, leaving families facing wrongful evictions despite having paid their rent on time.

The Alleged Scheme

Authorities arrested Destiny Dorsey and Christia Smith on six fraud-related charges each, while a warrant remains outstanding for Cynthia Dorsey. According to police documents, the three family members systematically intercepted rent checks and money orders intended for Fulton Pointe Apartments over several months. Investigators believe the scheme may extend to other apartment complexes in the area, expanding the scope of their ongoing investigation.

Kayla Sherrod became one of dozens of victims when she faced eviction in April while caring for her newborn baby. Her mother had paid rent months in advance, covering December through May, yet apartment management claimed they never received the payments. Court documents reveal that Destiny Dorsey, now charged with fraud, served as the plaintiff in Sherrod’s eviction case, highlighting a disturbing conflict of interest in the alleged scheme.

Impact on Families

The evictions devastated families who believed they had fulfilled their rental obligations. Sherrod noticed a troubling pattern as neighbors throughout the complex faced removal one after another. The financial strain hit her family particularly hard as her mother, who had prepaid the rent, now recovers from a stroke in a nursing home, unable to walk or speak. The wrongful eviction compounded their family crisis during an already difficult time.

Sherrod described the widespread nature of the problem to local media, noting how residents on different floors and in various buildings kept losing their homes. The pattern suggested a coordinated operation rather than isolated incidents, eventually drawing law enforcement attention to the systematic fraud.

Investigation Continues

East Point police are urging anyone with information about Cynthia Dorsey’s location to contact authorities immediately. The department continues investigating the full extent of the alleged fraud, believing additional victims and properties may be involved. With over 60 confirmed victims and $65,000 documented so far, the financial damage and human cost continue mounting as investigators piece together the complete scope of the operation.
