A routine shoplifting investigation escalated into a violent felony assault when a Georgia woman dragged a Covington police officer alongside her vehicle as she fled a traffic stop, leaving the officer hospitalized with injuries and facing multiple serious charges.

From Shoplifting Report to Officer Assault

The incident unfolded Friday afternoon around 4:30 p.m. when Covington police responded to a shoplifting call at a local Walmart. Although the suspect had already left the store, an officer spotted the vehicle entering a gas station across the street. When the officer conducted a traffic stop at a QuikTrip station on Highway 142 near Interstate 20, the driver suddenly accelerated with the officer still at the vehicle’s side.

Detective Daniel Seals described the chaotic scene that followed. Witnesses captured footage showing the vehicle speeding away through the crowded gas station during rush hour, with the officer desperately clinging to the side. The driver’s abrupt turn onto Highway 142 eventually threw the officer from the vehicle. Emergency responders transported him to Grady Memorial Hospital, where he remained in stable condition with bumps and bruises while undergoing additional medical testing.

Multi-Agency Manhunt Ends in Arrest

The Newton County Sheriff’s Office and Georgia State Patrol joined Covington police in an extensive search for the suspect. Officers in neighboring Porterdale located the suspect vehicle with two occupants inside, but the driver was not among them. Authorities tracked her to a nearby apartment complex around 8:30 p.m., approximately four hours after the initial incident, where she surrendered without resistance.

The suspect now faces multiple felony charges including aggravated assault on a police officer, felony fleeing and eluding, and shoplifting. Prosecutors may upgrade charges depending on the final assessment of the officer’s injuries after medical testing concludes. Authorities have not released the officer’s identity or specified what items were allegedly taken from Walmart.
