A 22-year-old man who allegedly terrorized Philadelphia residents while wearing a horror movie mask now faces felony charges as authorities believe he fled Pennsylvania to avoid arrest.
Suspect Identified After Terrifying Encounters
Philadelphia police identified Zymire Hughes as the masked individual who approached multiple victims in the early morning hours of August 12. Hughes allegedly wore a white Chucky-style Halloween mask while confronting more than a dozen pedestrians, filming the encounters on his cellphone. According to authorities, he asked one woman if she was ready to die while chasing her through city streets. Surveillance footage captured victims pleading for their lives as Hughes approached them unexpectedly.
District Attorney Larry Krasner delivered a pointed message during Thursday’s news conference. He emphasized that Hughes, currently on probation for a Montgomery County conviction, would face serious consequences. Krasner warned the suspect that law enforcement now pursued him with the same intensity he used to frighten innocent people. The district attorney also cautioned potential copycats against imitating this behavior, calling Hughes a coward for targeting unsuspecting residents.
Victim Fights Back Against Masked Attacker
Jameka Wilson, a 25-year-old Philadelphia actress, successfully defended herself when Hughes targeted her during her morning workout commute. Wilson described how the suspect appeared surprised when she confronted him rather than fleeing. She noticed him tilting his head as if confused about his next move, explaining that his body language exposed him to multiple defensive counterattacks. Her quick thinking and self-defense skills ended the confrontation without physical harm.
Police Captain Jason Smith suggested Hughes created this content for social media attention, possibly seeking monetization or personal entertainment. Investigators discovered three social media accounts linked to the suspect. Smith noted that Hughes never physically touched victims or displayed weapons, though he positioned his arm behind his back to imply he carried one. A Dunkin’ Donuts employee refused service because Hughes wore the mask inside the establishment.
Nationwide Search Underway
Authorities believe Hughes left Pennsylvania and may have traveled to the West Coast for employment. Police confirmed he maintains connections in California and Nevada. Officers describe him as a Black male with medium complexion, standing five feet eight inches tall with a thin build. Besides the distinctive white Chucky mask with black hair, he carried a black and blue plaid backpack during the incidents. Anyone with information about Hughes’ whereabouts should contact Philadelphia police immediately as the active warrant remains in effect.
