A Grand Haven father shot and killed his wife and their six children before setting their family home on fire and taking his own life, marking one of Michigan’s deadliest domestic violence incidents in recent memory.

The Tragic Discovery

First responders arrived at the Grand Haven residence late Friday morning after neighbors reported a house fire around 11:42 a.m. Firefighters and police discovered the bodies of Kristopher Karolkiewicz, 47, his wife Amanda, 39, and their six children, ranging in age from 5 to 15 years old. Ottawa County Sheriff’s Captain Jake Sparks confirmed at a Monday news conference that autopsies revealed all victims died from gunshot wounds.

Investigators determined the violence likely began Thursday night and continued into Friday morning, based on earlier reports from neighbors about the smell of smoke in the area. Preliminary findings indicate Karolkiewicz intentionally set fires in multiple locations throughout the home’s interior after the shootings. The bodies were found in different bedrooms throughout the residence.
