An Alabama man who publicly celebrated his friendship with a military veteran and his wife for nearly a decade now faces capital murder charges for allegedly killing the couple in their home early Sunday morning.

Decade-Long Friendship Ends in Tragedy

George Birmingham, 46, was arrested Sunday after authorities discovered Justin and Lena Elrod dead at 12:15 a.m. following reports of a burglary in Aliceville. Court records reveal Birmingham allegedly killed Lena Elrod with an electric saw and struck Justin Elrod in the head with a metallic object. The brutal nature of the crimes stands in stark contrast to years of social media posts showing what appeared to be a close friendship between Birmingham and the victims.

Social media records reviewed by Fox News Digital show Birmingham regularly posted about the Elrod family over approximately ten years. As recently as June 16, Birmingham wrote a Facebook post imagining a hypothetical Mars colonization trip, listing the Elrods among the friends and family he would want alongside him. He praised Justin as someone who “listens better than him” and described Lena as “fun to argue with,” closing with “I love you guys!”

History of Support and Friendship

Birmingham’s connection to the family extended beyond social media pleasantries. In February 2017, he shared a GoFundMe campaign to help cover medical expenses for one of the Elrod children, writing that the family was “very dear to my heart.” Three months later, Birmingham hosted a benefit comedy show to raise additional funds for the family’s medical costs. A June 2018 post featured Birmingham describing members of the Elrod family as “some of my favorite ladies.”

Community Mourns Veteran’s Death

Justin Elrod served his country in the military and later worked in corrections. Aliceville Mayor Terrence Windham remembered Elrod as a humble, hardworking man. “He was the last person that I would think that something like this would happen to,” Windham said. “He survived the military, survived working in the prison, and now, this situation, it just makes it even worse.” Authorities have not established a motive for the killings, though they confirmed Birmingham was an acquaintance of the couple.

Additional Charges and Legal Proceedings

Birmingham faces one count of capital murder, two counts of murder, one count of burglary, and additional drug-related charges. Authorities also identified him as the suspect in a separate burglary that occurred before the Elrods’ deaths. His preliminary hearing is scheduled for August 20. The couple leaves behind two children, who now face life without their parents following this senseless act of violence.
