Six Teens CHARGED — Wildfire Kills One

Six teenagers face serious criminal charges including manslaughter after allegedly shooting illegal fireworks at passing vehicles and into dry grassland along Highway 97, sparking a devastating wildfire that killed one person attempting to evacuate, injured six firefighters, and caused over $6 million in damages across more than 10,000 acres near Chelan, Washington.

Arrests Following Independence Day Tragedy

U.S. Marshals arrested three suspects at their Western Washington homes in Tacoma, Pacific, and University Place on Thursday. The teenagers, two aged 19 and one aged 18, appeared before a Douglas County judge on Friday to face charges stemming from the July 4th Chelan Hills Fire. Douglas County Sheriff Tyler Caille stated the group was shooting illegal fireworks at passing cars and into the dry grass along Highway 97 just after midnight when the area ignited.

The fire rapidly spread up the hillside and across the river from Chelan, devastating the community. An 18-year-old suspect, Michael Yakimov, was previously arrested in early September on identical charges. He pleaded not guilty and remains held on $1 million bail. Authorities plan to arrest two additional teenagers once warrants are finalized, bringing the total number of suspects to six.

Evidence and Accountability

Prosecutors obtained several Snapchat videos documenting the incident, one of which was shared with KIRO 7. Sheriff Caille emphasized that all six suspects share responsibility regardless of their specific actions that night. He stated that whether individuals physically held fireworks, drove the vehicle, or filmed the events, they all participated in the criminal activity and failed to come forward afterward with information about the incident.

The prosecutor intends to seek charges of manslaughter with a deadly weapon, arson, malicious mischief, and six counts of assault corresponding to the six injured firefighters. Authorities are requesting $1 million bail for each suspect, matching the amount set for Yakimov. The severity of the charges reflects the catastrophic consequences of the teenagers’ alleged actions on Independence Day.

Community Impact and Justice

Sheriff Caille acknowledged that no legal proceedings can restore what the community lost. The fire destroyed homes, precious memories, and claimed a life. He stated his commitment to ensuring those responsible face justice, describing these arrests as the beginning of bringing closure to the devastated area. The case highlights the dangerous consequences of illegal fireworks, particularly during dry summer conditions when vegetation becomes highly flammable and fires can spread rapidly across large areas.
